The Respect Ladder

On this page, we have put together exercises for workplaces that want to work with inclusion. The exercises contain instructions and practical information and are free to use.

Through the Respect Ladder, your workplace can take seven important steps toward an inclusive work environment. You get:

  • Exercises that broaden perspectives and deepen the understanding of diversity at the workplace.
  • Knowledge that increases the ability to challenge limiting norms at the workplace.
  • Conversations that strengthen the sense of community in teams and organizations.

Below, you find guidelines for good conversations and recommendations. Read these before starting to do the exercises.

Knowledge is an important building stone for change. Therefore, the second step includes a short lecture about domination techniques.

The third step contains a quiz walk with questions about equity. Download it and challenge your colleagues!

Experience!

The fourth step includes experience-based exercises to stimulate learning and development.

Reflect!

The fifth step consists of two exercises that challenge views and values.

Map!

In the sixth step, the exercises help map the workplace to identify strengths and challenges connected to diversity and inclusion.

Action!

In the seventh step, skills and knowledge obtained in previous steps are put into action plans to guide our way forward.

Here are suggestions for guidelines to create constructive and safe conversations. We have also put together some recommendations for doing the exercises. Good luck!

About The Respect Ladder

The Respect Ladder was created in 2018 as a joint effort between SBAB and Make Equal. The aim was to create conversations and reflection about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. The tool was designed to increase awareness of our own biases step-by-step and, through discussions, increase the ability to create positive change. Our organizations want to be a positive driving force in creating a more inclusive society where the workplace is a crucial part – therefore we made it possible to launch the tool free for everyone to use. Since 2024, the Respect Ladder has been administered by Make Equal in a smaller version.
